Streaking across the cover is Comet Hale-Bopp. In the article "Cometary Spectroscopy for Advanced Undergraduates" (page 1472), Sorkhabi, Jackson, and Daizadeh describe how spectra obtained from comets can be analyzed in an advanced physical chemistry course. The comet image was provided by Ale Marchini of the Department of Physics, University of Siena, Italy. The cover was designed by Betsy True.
