Abstract
Rules for determining the ground-state term and J state for atoms described by j-j coupling are presented. The rules are straightforward and give the same ground state values of J determined using Hund's rules for L-S coupling. A table of j-j coupled terms with their associated J values is presented. Tables of the ground-state term and J state are included for all the neutral atoms and for ions with only one partially filled subshell.
