Promoting Chemistry at the Elementary Level: A Low-Maintenance Program of Chemical Demonstrations

Abstract
We report on a demonstrations program that we have been conducting at Calvin College for the past nine years. The unique features of this program are that (i) it is designed for fifth- or sixth-graders (upper elementary); (ii) it is located on the college campus rather than at the elementary school; and (iii) it is concentrated by limiting the program to the examination week at the end of the college spring semester. This design allows our department to make a significant contribution to the promotion and education of chemistry in our community with minimal departmental input of time and effort. This program is intended to supplement other teaching programs by promoting enthusiasm for the discipline and providing an exciting introduction to the language of chemistry. Feedback from students, elementary teachers, and parents has been extremely positive. The program outlined here could easily be instituted at other colleges.
