Q: Which parts of JCE Online are limited to subscribers only?

JCE Online has three levels of access: JCE Online+ with access to everything at JCE Online, including the full text of the Journal; JCE Print with access to the supplementary material of some of the print-Journal articles; and free, no subscription access. We reserve the right to change the access restrictions of JCE Online content, so resources that are freely available as of this writing may in the future have their access restricted to Journal or JCE Online+ subscribers.

Q: I have entered my name and password as it appears on my mailing label, but am still denied access. What's up?

Access to complete Journal articles at JCE Online is limited to subscribers of JCE Online+. Not all subscribers to the print Journal are subscribers to JCE Online+ (although as I write this more than 850 of you are); you must include JCE Online+ with your subscription or upgrade your current print-Journal subscription to include JCE Online+ (the Reader's Inquiry card on page 320A provides pricing information).

If you are a JCE Online+ subscriber, then it is likely that you have mistyped your name. A common mistake is to include a period after an initial. Make certain that you type your name as it appears on your mailing label. If you still have problems, please send an email to jceonline@chem.wisc.edu.

Q: I am a JCE Online+ subscriber. Where do I enter my name and password to access JCE Online+ resources?

JCE Online+ resources are accessed from the article abstract pages (see the next question for a route to a given article). You will not be asked for your JCE Online+ log-in information until you click on the link to the JCE Online+ resource in the left-hand navigation bar on the abstract page or Table of Contents page. You need to enter your log-in information only one time per session.

JCE Online+ resources are located several layers down in the JCE Online structure. Consequently, you do not immediately come to the content that you have paid extra for. We hope to address this issue in the upcoming redesigned JCE Online (see below).

Q: Where do I find the supplementary materials that are mentioned in some of the articles I read in the Journal?

Supplementary materials for Journal articles at JCE Online are accessed from the abstract pages. The most direct way to find the supplementary material for a given article is to navigate to the abstract and then click the Journal Supplement link in the left-hand navigation bar. For example, to retrieve the supplementary materials for "A Chemistry Workshop for Secondary School Science Teachers" on page 387 of this issue starting from the JCE Online home page, one would click Journal, Past Issues, and then 1999 in the left-hand navigation bar. Clicking on the cover of this issue (March) on the 1999 page takes you to the issue Table of Contents; scroll down to find and click the article title, which takes you to the abstract with the Journal Supplement link in the left-hand navigation bar. Click this link and then choose your preferred flavor of the supplementary materials. Supplements are made available in the file format that the author provided, compressed for the Windows (.ZIP file) and Mac OS (.SIT file) platforms. If possible, a cross-platform PDF file version is also made available.

For those of you who remember command-line interfaces, the URL of the abstract is included as a footnote in the articles that have supplements. Typing this URL into the location field of your browser will take you directly to the article abstract, where you will find the links to the supplementary material.

JCE Online is your online source of "all things JCE". In order to provide you with an even more useful online resource, JCE Online is undergoing a facelift. In addition to a modified look, we have upgraded the navigation system to provide you with additional links to get you to the information you are looking for more quickly.
