| Abstract |
|
Multicomponent phase equilibria have important applications in chemistry, geology, and materials science, and some of the most important technological and commercial materials are alloys with properties that are in some way better than those of the pure substances. In this experiment a simply constructed, low-cost experimental assembly is described that allows accurate, reproducible results to be obtained by students with little practical experience. The samples, based on mixtures of organic compounds, may be readily prepared by technicians and sealed, isolating the students who will use the equipment from contact with the chemicals. The same equipment may be used repetitively by different groups of students with minimal maintenance and sustained performance. The total duration of the experiment is about 90 minutes. Approximately 20 minutes is necessary to prepare the equipment and slightly more than one hour is required to record the data to obtain the phase diagram.
