An advanced synthetic inorganic experiment is described in which students prepare Mo2(O2CCH3)4, a species containing a quadruple metal-metal bond. They then study the ligand substitution chemistry of the compound to form the unbridged systems [Mo2Cl8]4- and resources.
Supplement
A detailed version of the laboratory experiment is available as supplementary material. The text can be accessed as Microsoft Word documents and the figures as Adobe Illustrator and photoshop files. This material has been compressed into sit (for Macintosh) and zip (for Windows)files. The material can also be accessed as a pdf file using Acrobat Reader.
Our Secondary School editors work hard to distill all the JCE materials to produce a fraction of particular interest to high school teachers. We call it CLIC.
In recent years we have worked hard to better match our advertisers with our readers. When shopping for chemistry education materials, visit our advertisers' WWW sites first.
Take JCE along on your outreach missions. Copies of the Journal, guest access to JCE Online, our publications catalog, and more are available for your participants.
