Award Deadlines

National Research Council Associateships

The National Research Council announces the 2001 Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs to be conducted on behalf of more than 120 research laboratories throughout the U.S. representing nearly all U.S. government agencies with research facilities. The programs provide opportunities for Ph.D., Sc.D., or M.D. scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability to perform research on problems largely of their own choosing, yet compatible with the research interests of the sponsoring laboratory.

Approximately 300 new full-time Associateships will be awarded on a competitive basis in 2001 for research in chemistry; earth and atmospheric sciences; engineering, applied sciences, and computer science; life and medical sciences; mathematics; space and planetary sciences; and physics. Most of the laboratories are open to both U.S. and non-U.S. nationals, and to both recent doctoral recipients and senior investigators. Postdoctoral awards are made for one or two years, renewable for a maximum of three years. Applications are to be submitted directly to the National Research Council. They are accepted on a continuous basis throughout the year: those postmarked by January 15 will be reviewed in February, by April 15 in June, and by August 15 in October.

Materials Research Society Fellow Program

The Materials Research Society (MRS), in conjunction with the Optical Society of America (OSA), invites applications for its 2001-2002 Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program.

The Fellow will have a one-year appointment beginning September 1, 2001, and will work as a special legislative assistant on the staff of a member of Congress or a Congressional Committee. A prospective Fellow must demonstrate a record of success in research or scholarship in a field relevant to materials or optical science and technology. The Fellow will also demonstrate sensitivity toward policy issues and have a strong interest in applying scientific and technological knowledge to public-policy issues.

Fellowship and Award Opportunities in Green Chemistry

Joe Breen Memorial Fund

In 2000, the Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) and the American Chemical Society (ACS) established the Joseph Breen Memorial Fund to commemorate Joe Breen's commitment to and accomplishments for the advancement of Green Chemistry. The award funds are used to sponsor the participation of a young international Green Chemistry scholar in a Green Chemistry technical meeting, conference, or training program; "young" international scholar is defined as high school and above but below the level of assistant professor. The fund will award one or more Fellowships each year.

Hancock Memorial Scholarship in Green Chemistry

This scholarship honors Kenneth G. Hancock, director of the NSF Division of Chemistry, who is one of the earliest proponents of green chemistry and the "environmentally benign chemical synthesis and processing" approach. To recognize Hancock's commitment to the environment, an annual Kenneth G. Hancock Memorial Scholarship in Green Chemistry is offered under the auspices of the ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry. The scholarship provides national recognition for outstanding undergraduate and graduate student research to further the goals of Green Chemistry through research or education.

Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards

The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards Program is open to all individuals, groups, and organizations--both nonprofit and for profit, including academia, government, and industry. The nominated green chemistry technology must have reached a significant milestone within the past five years in the U.S. Self nominations are encouraged. Nominations are due December 31, 2000.

NSF-Catalyzed Innovations in the Undergraduate Laboratory

The 15th Annual National Science Foundation symposium, Catalyzed Innovations in the Undergraduate Laboratory, will be held at the Fall 2001 American Chemical Society Meeting in Chicago, August 26-30, 2001. Speakers will include a representative from NSF describing Foundation programs that support the undergraduate curriculum and past award winners in the Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement (ILI) Program or the Adaptation and Implementation track of the current Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) Program. Analytical Chemistry Instrument Information Online

Information about more than 25 categories of popular instruments is available on a new Web site, www.specsto.com. The site provides specifications of analytical chemistry instruments as well as price information and other details. It is possible to sort devices by manufacturer, model, or price and to compare instruments. The site can also be used as a directory to locate a manufacturer by product or name and to locate consultants, testing labs, and distributors.

Short Course, High Polymer Latexes

The 32nd annual one-week short course "Advances in Emulsion Polymerization and Latex Technology" will be offered at Lehigh University June 4-8, 2001. The course is an in-depth study of the synthesis and properties of high polymer latexes. Chemical Education International

The Committee on Teaching of Chemistry (CTC) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) announces the first issue of the new CTC electronic journal, Chemical Education International: Material, Life, and Environment. Volume 1, Issue 1 can be accessed at http://ce.t.soka.ac.jp/cei/v1n1/. Yoshito Takeuchi, Kanagawa University, is the editor-in-chief. The publication was formerly the International Newsletter on Chemical Education (INCE).

NSTA Announces Read It!

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has announced the creation of the NSTA Press, a part of their educational publishing efforts. One of NSTA Press's first ventures is the creation of Read It!, where teachers can preview the newest NSTA Press books online, thus enabling them to read the full text of select books without charge.

To read NSTA Press books online, go to the NSTA Science Store; enter the store; click on Read It! No special software is required to read the publications.
