The cover shows three scanning tunneling microscope images of 11-bromoundecanol physisorbed on a graphite substrate. The top image shows a 5 x 5-nm2 surface plot obtained at the liquid–solid interface at 1.5 V bias voltage and 300 pA setpoint tunneling current. Bright regions reflect topographically high areas corresponding to the terminal bromine atoms. Two columns (lamellae) consisting of a pair of 11-bromoundecanol molecules are shown. From left to right within a single lamella, one observes the hydroxyl group (darkest contrast), hydrocarbon chain, and the bromine group (brightest contrast) of the first molecule, then the bromine of the second molecule, hydrocarbon chain, and hydrogen bonding hydroxyl group. See Molecular Photography in the Undergraduate Laboratory: Identification of Functional Groups Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy by Leanna C. Giancarlo, Hongbin Fang, Luis Avila, Leonard W. Fine, and George W. Flynn on pages 66-71.

The cover was designed by Betsy True.
