Directions are provided for the fabrication of an inexpensive IR salt pellet press that may be used easily and quickly by beginning chemistry students. Following techniques described by others, the pressure is provided by an automotive hydraulic jack, and sample pellets are prepared by laying a hole-punched card on a flat stainless steel plate, filling the hole with ground powder, covering with a second steel plate, and pressing the resulting sandwich to ca. 2300 psi. The additional contributions of this paper are (i) directions for incorporating a hydraulic pressure gauge to facilitate reproducible pellet formation, (ii) guidelines for fabricating simple stainless steel press plates, (iii) the "mass production" of sample cards for larger classes, and (iv) the use of this system for salt pellets with extended IR transmission ranges.
