In our paper "Pólya's Isomer Enumeration Method: A Unique Exercise in Group Theory and Combinatorial Analysis for Undergraduates", we stated that no articles on isomer enumeration have appeared in this Journal explicitly citing the works of Pólya. This is incorrect. An article was published in the April 1988 issue of J. Chem. Educ. by Balaban, Kennedy, and Quintas. Their paper, "The Number of Alkanes Having n Carbons and a Longest Chain of Length d: An Application of a Theorem of Pólya" (J. Chem. Educ.1988, 65, 304-313), demonstrates algorithms to elucidate all structural isomers of alkanes. It is yet another example of how combinatorial mathematics and chemistry can come together in the classroom. We apologize for the accidental overlooking of this excellent and in-depth paper.

Our Secondary School editors work hard to distill all the JCE materials to produce a fraction of particular interest to high school teachers. We call it CLIC.
In recent years we have worked hard to better match our advertisers with our readers. When shopping for chemistry education materials, visit our advertisers' WWW sites first.
Take JCE along on your outreach missions. Copies of the Journal, guest access to JCE Online, our publications catalog, and more are available for your participants.
