Awards Announced
Priestley Medal, 2002
Allen J. Bard will receive the 2002 Priestley Medal of the American Chemical Society, its highest honor. The award is given each year for distinguished service to chemistry. Bard holds the Normal Hackerman/Welch Regents Chair in chemistry at the University of Texas, Austin.
Bard is known for his electrochemical research. He is the author of influential texts in the field and editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (1982 through 2001).
2001 Catalyst Awards
The American Chemistry Council (formerly the Chemical Manufacturers Association) has announced the names of the 2001 Responsible Care Catalyst Award Winners. The Catalyst Awards Program honors educators who excel at teaching science and chemistry to students in college, high school, middle school, and grade school.
Nominations for eligible recipients come from colleagues and individuals who observe a teacher's excellence and inspiration in the classroom. This year's Catalyst Award winners will receive a medal and citation. National winners will be honored at an awards dinner held in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association annual meeting. In addition, National winners' schools will receive $5,000 and Regional winners' schools will receive $2,500, to be used to improve their science education programs.
The American Chemistry Council is now accepting nominations for the 2002 Catalyst Awards program. The deadline for submissions is December 7, 2001. Nomination materials may be downloaded at www.americanchemistry.com/chemecology or by contacting Barbara Long, Manager, Education Programs, American Chemistry Council, 1300 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22209; phone: 703/741-5832; fax: 703/741-6832; www.americanchemistry.com.
