Determining the Percent Water in Organic Solvents Using the Zwitterionic Dimroth-Reichardt Betaine ET-30 Dye. An Industrially Relevant Application of a Previously Published Laboratory Experiment

Abstract
Recently in this Journal, Deng and Acree described the use of the solvatochromic dye ET-30 to teach the fundamental basis of UV-vis spectroscopy. A new experiment, which complements and extends the educational benefits of using ET-30 in undergraduate laboratories and provides a relevant industrial application of the theory described by Deng and Acree, is described here. ET-30 is used to determine the percent water in an organic solvent. This experiment, combined with a case study from Procter & Gamble's workshop "Professional Analytical Chemists in Industry", teaches students about the importance of dry organic solvents, the differences in diode array and scanning UV-vis spectrophotometers, the use of a wide variety of instrumental and wet-chemical analyses in answering analytical questions, and the application of the scientific approach to the solution of industrial chemical problems.
