ACS Awards in High School Chemistry Teaching

The American Chemical Society recognizes the contributions of high school chemistry teachers by presenting the Regional Awards in High School Chemistry Teaching each year at the ACS Regional Meetings. Ultimately one of these regional awardees will be the recipient of the James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching, sponsored by the Albemarle Corporation.

Nominees must be actively engaged in the teaching of chemistry in a high school (grades 9-12). While ACS Local Sections are especially encouraged to nominate candidates from their region, any individual (except those who are members of the award committee or who are currently enrolled as a student of the nominee) may submit one nomination or seconding letter during any given year. The regional award consists of two certificates (one for the recipient, the other for display at the recipient's school) and a cash prize of $1,000. More information is available from the ACS Office of Awards and Division Programs; phone: 800-227-8232, ext. 2109 or on the ACS home page. Enter awards in the search box, click Go, and then click ACS Awards in the search results. The deadline for submissions of 2003 nominations is February 1, 2002.

Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities

Research Site for Educators in Chemistry (RSEC)

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville offers faculty from primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) sabbatical fellowships aimed at enhancing both research and teaching in chemical and environmental analysis at the Fellow's home institution. Postdoctoral fellowships are also available (at lower priority) for prospective PUI faculty. These opportunities are supported by the Research Sites for Educators in Chemistry (RSEC) program of the National Science Foundation Chemistry Division.

NSF/RSEC Fellows will spend one or two academic semesters engaged in teaching and research at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and/or at a research-active partner PUI; one or two summers will be spent in full-time research. Details of the program, including an online application form, are available here. Potential applicants may also contact the program director, Kelsey D. Cook, Department of Chemistry, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Knoxville, TN 37996-1600; email; phone: 865-974-8019. Applications will usually be reviewed in February and August and should be received at least six months ahead of the desired start dates for timely consideration.
