An Ob-scertainer (Lab-Aids, Inc.) is an opaque, black petri dish with a design molded into the plastic. A metal ball is placed inside each Ob-scertainer and students make hypotheses about the internal shape of the design by any means other than opening the Ob-scertainer. This simple activity on hypothesis-forming provides a group exercise that can be used on the first day of laboratory in an introductory or general chemistry course. Judging from their comments and participation in the activity, students learn about the scientific method while cooperatively engaging in the process of discovery.

Our Secondary School editors work hard to distill all the JCE materials to produce a fraction of particular interest to high school teachers. We call it CLIC.
In recent years we have worked hard to better match our advertisers with our readers. When shopping for chemistry education materials, visit our advertisers' WWW sites first.
Take JCE along on your outreach missions. Copies of the Journal, guest access to JCE Online, our publications catalog, and more are available for your participants.
