Project Chemlab Searchable Database Now Available on JCE Online

Project Chemlab has teamed up with JCE to offer an online searchable annotated database of laboratories published in the Journal. This new feature column on Only@JCE Online encompasses 5038 laboratory experiments that have appeared in JCE between 1955 and the present.

Directions for searching are online. Before attempting a search, consult Field Definitions for lists of values you can search for: Track (Analytical, Biochemistry, etc.); Level (ranging from no chemistry and high school through upper-undergraduate); and Keywords (there is an extensive online keyword glossary of names and definitions, from AA-FP through XRAY). Or, you can search author, title, or the year and issue of publication. Detailed Tips for Searching are available online.

Hats Off to Journal Ambassadors!

The Journal salutes the record number of volunteers who participated in outreach efforts that took advantage of our Ambassador program during 2002. These efforts help connect teachers and students with chemistry content and with the larger chemical education community.

Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grants Program

The Pittsburgh Conference and its sponsoring societies announce the 2003 Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grants program. The grants have been established to promote excellence in science education and through the program small colleges can enhance their science curricula through grants for the purchase of scientific equipment, audio-visual or other teaching aids, and/or library materials for use in the teaching of science at the undergraduate level. Based on submitted proposals, at least 12 colleges will be selected to receive grants, each grant having a maximum of $9,000.

Application forms and additional information are available from Michael N. Carmosino, The Pittsburgh Conference—PCMNCG, 300 Penn Center Boulevard, Suite 332, Pittsburgh, PA 15235-5503; phone: 412/825-3220, ext. 204; fax: 412/825-3224. Applications and proposals must be received no later than December 1, 2002.

Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities

NSF MID Project Workshop Invitation

Are you interested in helping students: Learn to reason through problems rather than relying on algorithmic solutions? Make connections between the concepts of chemistry and real-world phenomena? Get actively involved in discovery and inquiry rather than just attempting to “learn for the exams”? Experience the process of doing science/chemistry so that they recognize its strengths and limitations? Engage in learning to speak and write the “language” of chemistry/science?

Consider participating in one of the NSF-funded Multi-Initiative Dissemination (MID) Project Workshops. These following workshops have been scheduled.

  • January 24–25, 2003
    University of Richmond, Richmond, VA
  • January 31–February 1, 2003
    Tarleton State University, Stephenville, TX
  • February 7–8, 2003
    Emory University, Atlanta, GA
  • March 7–8, 2003
    Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, IL
  • April 4–5, 2003
Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI

There is no registration fee and materials and meals are provided; participants pay personal travel expenses. Register online (accessed Oct. 2002) or contact Eileen Lewis, 510/642-3746 for paper registration materials or questions.
