An improved method for vigorously stirring small volumes of viscous reaction mixtures is described. A description of the movement of a magnetic stirring bar, oriented vertically in a test tube so that it cannot align freely with the magnetic field of the stirrer magnet, is included. This confinement results in more vigorous mixing of small volumes through use of larger and more powerful stirring bars in a reduced volume of liquid as compared to conventional magnetic stirring. The influence of stirring bar shape and size on stirring effectiveness when used with the stirring bar oriented in this manner also is described.

Our Secondary School editors work hard to distill all the JCE materials to produce a fraction of particular interest to high school teachers. We call it CLIC.
In recent years we have worked hard to better match our advertisers with our readers. When shopping for chemistry education materials, visit our advertisers' WWW sites first.
