Abstract
In 1941, JCE published a series of five articles by M. F. Crass, Jr. on the development of the match industry, a saga which included major chemical discoveries, a ghastly industrial disease from toxic white phosphorus, and efforts to find and implement alternatives to white phosphorus in match formulations.
