All of us are aware that the majority of our students do most of their computer-based work in their own rooms rather than in departmental or institutional computing facilities. One of the goals of the JCE WebWare project is to make available computer applications that can be used in a variety of venues—the classroom, laboratory or computer room, or the student's own living space. This month we feature four applications from Robert Hanson of St. Olaf College. All four have the potential of being used by faculty in the classroom/laboratory setting as well as by students working alone or in small groups. Hückel Determinant Solver and the Mechanism-Based Kinetics Simulator are exceptionally powerful, yet easily mastered, tools for wide-ranging exploration of their subject matter at various levels of the chemistry curriculum, while The Chemical Name Game and What's in a Name offer a new take on an important aspect of learning the language of chemistry and encourage collaboration in both formal and informal settings.
