Abstract
This experiment illustrates how an unknown compound can be systematically identified from a large number of possible isomers by employing infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The experiment is designed to force students to make decisions based on their infrared spectrum before obtaining a mass spectrum of their compound. The systematic approach allows the student to obtain as much information as possible from each of these spectroscopic methods in order to determine the structure of their unknown.
Supplement
The supplemental material includes the data report form for this experiment. Information on possible compounds—their elemental analysis and molecular weight—is also available.
