Awards Announced

Welch Award in Chemistry

The Welch Foundation has announced that Ronald Breslow of Columbia University and a past president of the American Chemical Society is the recipient of the 2003 Welch Award in Chemistry. The award consists of a gold medallion and a $300,000 prize, to be presented at a banquet in Houston in October 2003. Breslow received the award for lifetime contributions to basic research in which he studies how nature works at the molecular level and then mimics those processes, an approach known as biomimetic chemistry. His group created novel synthetic catalysts that can carry out the reactions normally performed by natural enzymes, using the same general principles that are used by the enzymes themselves. Breslow and his group have also created new molecular compounds that work in a new and interesting way to reform defective cancer cells.

Chemists’ Club Presents Winthrop-Sears Medal

The Chemists’ Club, headquartered in New York, has presented its 2003 Winthrop-Sears Medal to Robert W. Gore, chair of W. L. Gore & Associates. The medal, which recognizes entrepreneurial achievement that contributes to the vitality of the chemical industry and the betterment of mankind, will be presented to Gore on June 12 in conjunction with the Chemical Heritage Foundation’s Heritage Day ceremonies in Philadelphia. Gore is familiar to many as the creator of Gore-Tex, a breathable, waterproof fabric.

Teaching Awards

The University of Wisconsin—Madison and the University of Wisconsin System have announced teaching awards for 2003:

  • Catherine Middlecamp: Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award
  • John W. Moore: Benjamin Smith Reynolds Award for Excellence in Teaching Engineers

It will include hands-on workshops, symposia, poster sessions, plenary speakers, and exhibits. Attending the conference provides an opportunity to expand teaching strategies and techniques. Attendees can contribute to the chemistry profession by sharing the things that work in their classroom or the results of their chemistry research.

A wealth of information may be found at the conference Web site and most conference details need to be taken care of online. Use the Web site to submit proposals for symposia and workshops, to submit abstracts for papers and posters, to register for the conference, to arrange for on-campus housing and meal plans, to request an exhibitor booth.

18th National Educators’ Workshop

The 18th annual National Educator’s Workshop (NEW: Update 2003) will be held October 19–22, 2003. The NEW workshops provide educators with useful laboratory experiments and classroom demonstrations. This year’s workshop highlights emerging science and technology.

The 2003 workshop is being hosted by NASA Langley Research Center and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Approximately 45 peer-reviewed experiments and activities will be demonstrated, covering a range of concepts in materials science, engineering, and technology.

For registration information contact Jim Jacobs, NEW: Update 2003, School of Science and Technology, Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA 23504-8060; phone: 757/823-8109; fax: 757/823-8215. The latest workshop information is available online.
