Periodic Table Live! 3rd Edition
Periodic Table Live! 3rd Edition (PTL!) has been released by JCE Software
and shipped to those who have placed orders. More information about PTL! appears
on the JCE Software Web site. See
the abstract
of PTL! as it appeared in the December 2002 issue of JCE.
Periodic Table Live! 3rd Edition (PTL!), Special Issue 30,
is a CD-ROM for both Mac OS and Windows. PTL! provides a stimulating interactive
journey through the periodic table suitable for students at all levels of chemistry,
especially in high school, general, inorganic, and solid-state chemistry courses.
New in the third edition is powerful, easy-to-use interactive graphing and sorting.
All information has been updated for this edition. PTL! continues to include a
wealth of information about the elements: descriptions and pictures, biographies
of discoverers, videos of reactions, information about sources and uses, numerical
values of macroscale and atomic-scale properties, and crystal structures.
To purchase this CD-ROM or for information about its use by a library or Wide
Area Network (WAN) including the World Wide Web, contact JCE
Software.

(left) and the new graphing and sorting window (right).
JCE Buyers Guide
The February 2003 edition of the JCE Buyers Guide was shipped with
the print issue of JCE. Broader coverage characterizes this publication:
it now lists interfaced experiments, laboratory manuals, laboratory notebooks,
models, reference books, and software in addition to books.
The print edition of the Buyers Guide appears twice each year—with the
February and September issues of JCE—and is the most comprehensive
listing of its kind. Access to the same information is always available on JCE
Online. The online version has all the same information as in print, plus
more—it is searchable, linked to textbook reviews and publisher's sites,
and is current.
Awards
Santa Clara Valley Mosher Award
The ACS Santa Clara Valley section will present the 2002 Harry and Carol Mosher
Award to
- C. Marvin Lang, University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point
The award will be presented on January 17, 2003, for his contributions to chemical
education, the field of chemistry, and ACS. Lang has presented more than 800 chemical
demonstration programs in the U.S. and abroad.
Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities
Ethics Course
Ethics Across the Curriculum: A Practical Workshop for Integrating Professional
Ethics into Technical Courses will be offered June 24–July 1, 2003, at the
Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions (CSEP) at Illinois Institute
of Technology, Chicago. The week-long workshop will consider how to integrate
professional ethics into technical courses, with an emphasis on practice not theory,
on what works in class and what doesn’t. Funding from the National Science
Foundation will pay for many expenses but is contingent on financial support and
a commitment on the part of the home institution. For more information, contact
Michael Davis, Senior Fellow, Center for the
Study of Ethics in the Professions, IIT, HUB Mezzanine, Room 204, 3241 South Federal
Street, Chicago, IL 60616-3793; phone: 773/288-8348; fax: 312/567-301, or go to
this Web site.
The deadline for completed applications is February 28, 2003.
Central European Journal of Chemistry
A Central European Journal of Chemistry (CESJ) has been established
to enhance communication to the global scientific community of the best research
done in Russia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and other countries of this region.
CESJ is published as an online-only journal, the first regular issue of which
will appear in January 2003. Further information can be found at the journal’s
Web page.
European History of Science Study Tour
The eighth biennial history of science study tour will be for two full weeks,
October 5–19, 2003, in London and Paris. The tour will visit many places
of scientific interest including the Science Museum, Old Royal Observatory, Royal
Institution, National Maritime Museum, British Museum, and the Natural History
Museum in London, with a day excursion to Down House (Darwin’s birthplace)
and Canterbury. In Paris, we will visit the Arts et Mètiers Museum, the
Pasteur Museum, and the Curie Institute, with day excursions to the International
Stained Glass Institute at Chartres and to a working Camembert cheese farm in
the Normandy countryside.
A tentative cost for the tour (excluding airfare and based on double occupancy)
is $2250; this includes 24 meals and all transfers within the two countries, including
travel by EuroStar from London to Paris. For more information, please contact
Mary Virginia Orna, Department of Chemistry,
College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, NY 10805; 914/654-5302.
Photos from the Outreach Front!
CHED outreach was present at the recent SERMACS (Southeast Regional ACS) meeting
that took place November 13–17, 2002, in Charleston, South Carolina. Education
had a prominent place on the meeting program, including many offerings for high
school teachers. Awards were presented as well. But let the photographs tell the
story.

Zaida Morales-Martinez (Florida International
University) received the 2002 Women Chemists Committee Award for Contributions
to Diversity in the Southeast Region from Eli Pearce, ACS President.

Joey Hatcher Gaby, teacher at Tyner Academy of
Math, Science & Technology, Chattanooga, TN, received the 2002 ACS Regional
Award for Teaching High School Chemistry in the Southeast Region from Glenn Crosby
(Washington State University and ACS District VI Director).
