Undergraduate students at Calvin College obtained the images on the cover using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The images are of DNA on mica, actin filaments on mica, memory arrays of microchips, and organic monolayers on graphite. Students captured the images as part of an introductory course in scanning probe microscopy and during independent research projects as described by Aumann, Muyskens, and Sinniah in "Visualizing Atoms, Molecules, and Surfaces by Scanning Probe Microscopy".

The cover was designed by Betsy True.
