Talbot Prize

The Society of Academic Authors has announced that the college textbook Chemistry: The Molecular Science by John W. Moore, Conrad L. Stanitski, and Peter C. Jurs has been awarded the Talbot Prize for visual excellence. The prize, affectionately called the Talby among authors, bears the name of William Henry Fox Talbot, a photography pioneer who was the author of the important 1844 text The Pencil of Nature; the book is considered the single most important book of photographs ever produced. Stanitski is at the University of Central Arkansas, Jurs is at Pennsylvania State University, and Moore (editor of this Journal ) is at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

International Young Chemistry Writer Award, 2002

The winner of the 2002 International Young Chemistry Writer of the Year Award, organized by The Alchemist, has been announced. Bethany Halford, Baltimore, MD, is the winner for her article “The Incredible Shrinking Motor”. The article will be published online in The Alchemist (accessed Apr 2003), and Halford will receive a check for $2500.

The runners-up are Eric Tippmann, a Ph.D. student at Ohio State University for “The Wide Spectrum of Photochemical Applications” and Antonis Kanaras, a Ph.D. Student at Liverpool University, UK, for “Teaching DNA New Tricks?” Each of the runners-up receive $1000 and publication of their articles in The Alchemist.

Distinguished Service Award

Robert L. Caret, president of San José State University, has announced that Pamela Stacks is the recipient of the Faculty Distinguished Service Award for 2002–2003. Stacks is professor and chair of the university’s Chemistry Department.

Survey, History of Chemistry

John T. Stock, professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut, is attempting to survey the extent to which the history of chemistry forms a part of the curriculum of universities, colleges, and high schools at present. Since he is not able to find any recent studies on this topic, he would appreciate any available information or guidance, which may be sent to him at University of Connecticut, Department of Chemistry, Storrs, CT 06269-3060; fax: 860/486-2981.

18th BCCE Deadlines

The deadline for proposals for symposia, workshops, and exhibitor contracts for the 18th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) is approaching. The conference, sponsored by the ACS Division of Chemical Education, will be held from July 18–22, 2004, at Iowa State University of Science and Technology, Department of Chemistry.

Attending and participating in the 18th BCCE gives you an opportunity to expand your teaching strategies and techniques. Designed for anyone teaching chemistry to grades 6–16, the 18th BCCE will include hands-on workshops, symposia, poster sessions, plenary speakers, and exhibits.

If you are interested in organizing a symposium or leading a workshop, the deadline for submitting a proposal is July 1, 2003. Submission by this date will allow the title of your symposium or workshop to appear in the 18th BCCE Call for Papers. If you are interested in having a booth in the exhibition area, exhibitor booth contracts are due March 5, 2004. Abstracts for papers to be presented at the various symposia are due January 26, 2004.

Information about the 18th BCCE, an online symposium proposal form, a workshop proposal form, and an abstract and registration system can be found online.
