Abstract
This paper describes materials and instruction for home labs using locally available materials or supplies furnished in low-cost "home kits". The experiments, adapted from literature procedures and conventional experiments, are complemented by Web- and CD-based step-by-step animated instructions. The experiments provide investigative learning and prepare students for more complex laboratory work in traditional settings. The lack of direct contact with instructional staff is greatly relieved by quick interactions through the Web. In addition to specific experience with a variety of analytical procedures, these practicals alleviate fears associated with chemicals and provide greater awareness of some chemicals students encounter in everyday life.
Supplement
Additional information for implementing home practicals in distance education in the areas listed in this paper is available. This information includes a description of ways to create the key components of the home kit for practicals.
