JCE Digital Library UpdateTwo of four collections in the JCE Digital Library are now incorporated into the National Science Digital Library (NSDL).- JCE WebWare: Web-Based Learning Aids. These are Web-deliverable animations, simulations, calculations, and other pedagogically useful items that can provide new insights through interactive software.
- JCE SymMath: Symbolic Mathematics in Chemistry. Documents for Mathcad, Mathematica, Maple, or MATLAB to help students learn mathematically intensive aspects of chemistry. The collection is an outgrowth of JCE’s Mathcad in the Chemistry Curriculum feature column.
These two collections will become part of the NSDL very soon-look for an announcement when that happens. - JCE QBank: Resources for Student Assessment. Web-deliverable chemistry questions that can provide access anytime and anywhere, feedback and tutoring based on student responses, and a variety of new question formats that include images, color, sound, and video.
- JCE DigiDemos: Tested Demonstrations. Digitized text, graphics, sound, video, and safety information for chemical demonstrations.
The JCE Digital Library Project continues to look for innovative teaching materials to include in these four collections. Get the latest information by sending an email to JCE. Help build the library: contribute! Sustain the library: use it! PITTCON AwardsThe Pittsburgh Conference announces the winners of the awards listed below. Microscale Workshops in MexicoThe Mexican Microscale Chemistry Center in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Sciences of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA) in Mexico City, will offer several 20-hour microscale chemistry workshops in 2004; listed below are the name of the workshop, the workshop leader, and the workshop dates. - Production of Disinfectants–Oxidants. Jorge G. Ibanez (UIA). April 14-16
- Construction of Simple Analytical Equipment. Alejandro Baeza (UNAM). May 10-12
- Marvels in Organic Chemistry. Rosa Maria Mainero (UIA). May 17-19
- Green Chemistry. Ma. del Carmen Doria (UIA). May 19-21
- Environmental Chemistry. Margarita Hernandez (UIA). July 5-7
- Introduction to Materials Chemistry: Semiconductors. Jorge G. Ibanez (UIA). July 7-9
- Introduction to Materials Chemistry: Polymers. Angela Kohler (Frei Univ. of Berlin, Germany). July 12-14
- Introduction to Materials Chemistry: Metals and Corrosion. Ruben Vasquez and Arturo Fregoso (UIA). July 14-16
- High School Chemistry. (Instructors to be announced). August 11-13
Workshops with an apparent intersect of the termination-initiation dates do not overlap since the first workshop ends on a Wednesday at 1 p.m., and the second starts that same day at 2 p.m. The language is Spanish (except in the Introduction to Materials Chemistry: Polymers, which will be taught in English with selected translations). At least one month advance registration is required. A limited number of partial scholarships, kindly provided by Provitec, are available for the High School Chemistry workshop. Chemists Celebrate Earth DayAsk your students “What do you know about H2O?” The American Chemical Society (ACS) has selected this as the theme for Earth Day, April 22, 2004. ACS offers several ways to help students and teachers celebrate. The unifying event is rain water testing. A limited number of pH strips will be provided to each local section through the ACS Office of Community Activities. Students can test their rain water to see if it is acidic. Afterward, they can go to the National Atmospheric Deposition Program’s interactive Web site to see how their results compare to local and national averages. Students in grades K-12 can also participate in a music video contest. Students will be asked to record a music video on VHS tape using the 2004 Earth Day theme. Detailed rules and guidelines will be published at the Chemists Celebrate Earth Day Web site (accessed Dec 2003) by January 2004. Hands-on activities, safety guidelines, and related articles will be posted on the Web site. Print and electronic resource lists will also be available on the site courtesy of the Chemists in the Library Working Group.College Chemistry Canada ConferenceThe 31st conference of College Chemistry Canada (CCC), titled Taste of Chemistry, will be hosted by Okanagan University College, Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, from June 10-13, 2004. The conference will look at the wine industry in Canada’s Okanagan Valley, which is fast becoming a world-class producer of truly great wines. The conference begins on Thursday evening. On Friday and Saturday there will be speakers knowledgeable in the wine industry and research information from the Eggers Group, which involves the analysis and characterization of aroma precursor compounds in wine. This research also involves collaborative studies with the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (PARC). A wine tasting workshop is planned. The CCC banquet Saturday evening will be held on the patio overlooking Okanagan Lake at Gray Monk Estate Winery. For Sunday, participants can choose to participate in a scenic bicycle ride on the famous Kettle Valley railway through the hills above Okanagan Lake with dinner at Hillside Estate Winery, or take a tour of Summerhill Estate Winery and lunch while cruising Okanagan Lake on the Fintry Queen, Kelowna’s historic paddle wheel boat. For more information on this conference contact Pat Baird, phone: 250/762-5445 ext. 2239, or visit the Web site and select the 2004 CCC conference. Proposal Deadlines |
