An Expeditious Experiment To Determine the Faraday Constant

Abstract
This paper describes changes to the classical copper electrolysis experiment that reduce the deposition time. The most salient modification replaces metal strips with a piezoelectric quartz crystal with gold electrodes as the site where copper is deposited. Details of the equipment and experimental procedure used for the determination of the Faraday constant are provided. The numerical value obtained from a series of 36 experiments using two crystals with electrodes of different diameters was 96.6 ± 0.3 kC mol–1. The results obtained for the Faraday constant were not statistically different (α = 0.05) from the ones found in the literature for the classical experiment. The modifications proposed make this a simple, reliable experiment that is also affordable and yields results quickly.
