Conformational Analysis in an Advanced Integrated Laboratory Course

Abstract
Spectroscopy is a major analytical tool used to study molecules in all areas of chemistry in industrial and academic settings. Undergraduate students of chemistry need to become well-versed in modern spectroscopic techniques as a preparation for their future careers as chemists. To meet these goals, the Chemistry Department at CSU, Chico has initiated a three-semester advanced integrated laboratory sequence that gives our students research-like experiences doing projects that crossover the major subdisciplines of chemistry. An interdisciplinary project is described that requires students to synthesize conformationally mobile and static α-bromocyclohexanones and to assess, qualitatively and quantitatively, and validate, using several spectroscopic tools, solvent effects on the conformational preferences of these molecules. The project exposes students to a variety of experimental and theoretical techniques that include organic synthesis, product purification, 1H and 13C NMR spectrometry, GC–MS, molecular modeling, and IR and UV spectroscopy.

General procedures, including equipment and instrumentation needs, detailed experimental procedures for the preparation of 2, 3a, 3e, and cis- and trans-2-bromo-4-tert-butylcyclohexanone, CAS registry numbers of chemicals used, the laboratory handout given to the students, IR spectra of bromoketone 2 in CCl4 and CH3CN, and selected 1H spectra of bromoketones 2, 3a, and 3e are available.
