I’m concerned about a safety factor in the paper, “A Solvent-Free Oxidation of Alcohols in an Organic Laboratory” (1). In my estimation, it is not a good idea to conduct a “no-solvent” reaction “…until the flask becomes warm”. As described, the experiment may never be a problem, but I can envision two scenarios where problems might occur: (i) The process is applied to a more reactive alcohol or (ii) there is unauthorized “scale up”.
Our Secondary School editors work hard to distill all the JCE materials to produce a fraction of particular interest to high school teachers. We call it CLIC.
In recent years we have worked hard to better match our advertisers with our readers. When shopping for chemistry education materials, visit our advertisers' WWW sites first.
Take JCE along on your outreach missions. Copies of the Journal, guest access to JCE Online, our publications catalog, and more are available for your participants.
