The Literature of Chemistry is a list of more than 1000 titles that comprises a core collection for an undergraduate chemistry library. It has been compiled by Judith Douville, a chemist and librarian, and reviewed by several chemistry and science librarians. Many of the titles were first suggested in columns that the author wrote for the New England Association of Chemistry Teachers Journal over a period of 14 years. Similar lists were published in 1965 by the Advisory Council on College Chemistry1 and in 1982 by the ACS Division of Chemical Education, also written by Douville,2 so this update is long overdue. The entries are organized into ten areas, beginning with basic resources—dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks but also including books on the broader context of chemistry. Each of the major subspecialities of chemistry, including environmental and industrial chemistry, has its own section. Each entry contains full bibliographic information and a brief description of the book. The book concludes with lists of major Internet resources and the key journals recommended by the ACS Committee on Professional Training.3 There is also an index of authors and titles. This volume is an essential reference for any undergraduate chemistry program that needs to evaluate or upgrade its library collection. Notes- Advisory Council on College Chemistry published (as serial publication no. 12) Guidelines and Recommended Title List for Undergraduate Chemistry Libraries; a report of the A.C.C.C. panel meeting on guidelines for book lists and library development: Washington, DC, Feb 1965; Crawfordsville, IN, Oct 1965; Stanford, CA: 1966. 44 pp.
- Guidelines and Suggested Title List for Undergraduate Chemistry Libraries, Robert C. Brasted and Leallyn B. Clapp, Eds., from a list complied by Judith A. Douville; sponsored by the ACS Division of Chemical Education and ACS Department of Educational Activities, rev. American Chemical Society, 1982. 76 pp.
- Information concerning the ACS Committee on Professional Training, guidelines for undergraduate chemistry programs and library requirements can be found online (accessed May 2005). The mailing address is Secretary, Committee on Professional Training, American Chemical Society, 1155 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036.
