Abstract
A small-scale low-cost portable gas chromatograph (the total cost of the instrument is approximately $65) was developed that is suitable for hands-on learning and teaching of the basic concepts of chromatography. The portability and miniaturization were ensured by the application of a small propane/butane cylinder to supply the carrier gas and by the use of optic fibers for light transmission to the electronic unit with a photoresistor as a sensor. The instrument proved that the measurements are sufficiently detailed and reliable for the basic chromatographic concepts to be introduced through a hands-on approach. The instrument does not require the use of a computer for recording data, and it also enables students actively to engage in measurements and in the assembling of the instrument at a higher level.
Supplement
A detailed student manual and a teacher's guide are available.
