The Executive Committee (ExecComm) of the Division of Chemical Education (CHED) conducted an online conference October 14-31, 2005, to provide participants with the opportunity to examine the current state of the Division and explore the directions it might take in the future. ExecComm recognized that few CHED members and other interested parties are able to (or wish to) attend its meetings on Saturday mornings at the ACS national meetings; this conference was designed to give everyone a chance to be part of the discussion and to be heard.
Four papers were presented; The View From the CHED Chair, Membership: Who Are We and Where Do We Go from Here? Biennial Conferences on Chemical Education, and Peering Into a Crystal Ball: An Evaluative Look to the Future. The discussions of the papers and the overall theme of the conference elicited more than 180 responses, providing suggestions for possible future programs for high school teachers and two- and four-year college faculty, as well as ideas for engaging faculty at research universities. The conference was organized by the CHED Committee on Computers in Chemical Education.
