Abstract
An improved method of performing a flame test for qualitative analysis in the general chemistry laboratory is described. A multichannel array spectrometer equipped with a fiber optic probe for acquisition of emission spectra is used with significant advantages compared to the visual flame test. The greatest advantage is the improved selectivity of the emission spectroscopic method as compared to a visual analysis of flame color.
Supplement
The complete lab for the students, including a work sheet, and notes for the instructor are available.
