Abstract
This article describes a series of spreadsheet modeling exercises that form part of a new upper-level course in Solid State Materials and Surface Chemistry at The College of Wooster. The exercises afforded students the opportunity to interact with the conceptual framework used to describe electron behavior in solids. In the final exercise, students demonstrate their understanding of the concepts by showing how experimental measurements of the electrical conductivity of a semiconducting material (a macroscopic property) can be used to obtain a graphical estimate of the electronic band gap in the material (a microscopic property).
Supplement
Spreadsheets and graphs for the three modeling experiments are available.
