The author replies to Kerber.
We completely agree with and support Kerber's call for making teaching and learning of second-year organic chemistry more accurate, more effective, and less difficult. However, we feel that more insight into the mechanisms of addition reactions to alkenes is needed before requesting radical changes in the organic chemistry terminology; that is, completely abandoning Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov terminology. We hope that with our and other research groups' continuing efforts, sufficient evidence will be presented to justify the removal of this admittedly inaccurate, misleading, and obsolete terminology in both the college and university chemistry courses, textbooks, and standardized tests, as well as in other chemical literature.
