September 2008 Featured on the Cover
This issue includes a number of biochemistry laboratory articles, and myoglobin is featured in several of them. In the article starting on page 1250, Gina MacDonald discusses teaching protein purification and characterization techniques as part of a student-initiated, project-oriented biochemistry laboratory course. Her students have chosen to purify a wide range of proteins, including myoglobin. On page 1260, Barbara T. Nash describes a computer-interfaced drop counter that can act as an inexpensive fraction collector for column chromatography. Students in her class apply this system to determine the molar mass of myoglobin by gel filtration chromatography. The representation of myoglobin shown on the cover (E. C. Liong and G. N. Phillips, Jr.) was created with PyMol (Frank DeLano).
