Abstract
This paper describes an experiment in which first-year organic chemistry students correlate gas chromatographic retention times to molecular surface area and boiling points for a series of aromatic hydrocarbons on both polar and nonpolar columns. Details of the experimental procedure are provided along with representative student results. The experiment provides experience in gas chromatographic techniques, molecular modeling, and correlation analysis.
