Enthalpies of formation of aqueous ions can be determined by solution
calorimetry. This article describes an experiment for the physical chemistry
laboratory. Enthalpies of formation of aqueous sodium, potassium, chloride
and iodide ions are calculated from the enthalpies of solution of salts. The
enthalpies of solution are measured with the Parr 1455 solution calorimeter.
The calorimeter is controlled and data are collected by a computer attached
to the calorimeter's serial port. The experiment is simple and yields results
that are in good agreement with literature values.
Our Secondary School editors work hard to distill all the JCE materials to produce a fraction of particular interest to high school teachers. We call it CLIC.
In recent years we have worked hard to better match our advertisers with our readers. When shopping for chemistry education materials, visit our advertisers' WWW sites first.
Take JCE along on your outreach missions. Copies of the Journal, guest access to JCE Online, our publications catalog, and more are available for your participants.
