This column summarizes a paper by Susan M. Land entitled Cognitive Requirements for Learning with Open-Ended Learning Environments (Educational Technology Research and Development 200048, 61-78), which discusses the cognitive demands on learners imposed by three important components of computer simulations. For each of these components, Land describes the cognitive demands placed on the learner, the problems associated with these demands, and the consequent implications for design of simulations and other OELEs that assist a learner in developing the skills necessary to meet the demands.

Our Secondary School editors work hard to distill all the JCE materials to produce a fraction of particular interest to high school teachers. We call it CLIC.
In recent years we have worked hard to better match our advertisers with our readers. When shopping for chemistry education materials, visit our advertisers' WWW sites first.
Take JCE along on your outreach missions. Copies of the Journal, guest access to JCE Online, our publications catalog, and more are available for your participants.
