Overhead Projector Demonstration of the Chelate Effect. In “A Colorful Look at the Chelate Effect”, Donald C. Bowman describes three sequences of reactions that can be used to demonstrate the chelate effect on an overhead projector. Solutions of Ni(II) (left column) and Cu(II) (right two columns) can be reacted with ammonia, pyridine, and various chelating agents to produce complex ions whose beautiful colors show that reactions have taken place. In sequences down the columns of beakers, chelating ligands displace monodentate ligands, causing color changes. The complex ions formed are the subject of this month's Featured Molecules.

Reactions were performed by Jim Maynard and photographed by Jerry Jacobsen of the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
