News from Journal HouseAwards Announced2008 Helen Free AwardMickey Sarquis, Miami University–Middleton, is the recipient of the 2008 Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach of the American Chemical Society. The award is made for improving public recognition and appreciation of the contributions of chemistry. It was established in 1995 by the ACS Committee on Public Relations and communications.Sarquis began her outreach efforts with summer programs in the mid-1980s and has continued and expanded her efforts since then in a variety of venues. It is estimated that through her outreach efforts Sarquis has had an impact on 21,500 teachers, who in turn have reached more than one million students. She has also reached an additional 20,000 teachers through informal initiatives and an estimated 75,000 students and families. 2008 AANC Professional AwardSuzanne Gurton, Education Manager at the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, has received the 2008 Professional Award, given each year by the Astronomical Association of Northern California to an astronomer who has done outstanding work in distinguishing and fostering amateur astronomy. Award DeadlinesPasser Education FundApplications are being accepted for grants supported by The Dorothy and Moses Passer Education Fund. This Fund was established by a generous donation of Dorothy and Moses Passer. Moses (Mike) Passer was for many years the head of the ACS Education Division. The Fund supports grants to provide support for teachers in programs at two- and four-year colleges or universities that do not have any advanced degree programs in the chemical sciences. The awards are to support continuing education activities that must be directly related to the applicant’s teaching and must take them away from their campus. The applicant must be a full time faculty member at his or her institution.Applications are reviewed by a committee. There is no application form but the application must include a description of the proposed activity and how it relates to his/her teaching with dates, locations, titles, and contacts; a brief description of the applicant’s institution and department; a short curriculum vita; an itemized estimate of expenses, amount of aid requested, and sources of all supplemental funds. No support will be given for general attendance at national, regional, or local ACS meetings nor for any sabbatical support. Closing dates are three times each year: January 1, April 1, and September 1. All applications must be received electronically. For further information or inquiries contact Richard Jones, Sinclair Community College, Dayton, OH 45402. ACS Women Chemists Committee Travel AwardsThe ACS Women Chemists Committee has announced that Eli Lilly & Co. is sponsoring a program to provide funding for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral women chemists to travel to scientific meetings in 2009 to present the results of their research. Grants may be applied only for registration, travel, and accommodations and are restricted to travel to meetings within the U.S. Complete guidelines as well as an application form may be found online (accessed Sep 2008). The next award date is February 15, 2009; applications must be received in advance of this review date an a minimum of 6 weeks prior to the meeting date. Courses, Seminars, Meetings, OpportunitiesVernier Fall WorkshopsVernier Software & Technology is offering free hands-on workshops to help math and science educators integrate data-collection technology into their curriculum with the use of handheld devices. Workshops are four hours long during which trainers will provide hands-on experience using data-collection technology to enhance science projects at the high school and middle school level. Attendees will learn how to use Vernier’s LabQuest interface and will also cover data collection using computers, TI graphing calculators, and Palm OS handhelds.Workshops are scheduled throughout the U.S. for the months of September, October, and November 2008. Each workshop includes lunch or dinner and a training manual. Educators have the option of earning two (quarter) graduate science credit hours; attendees may also choose to purchase Vernier equipment. For details about these options as well as for a workshop schedule, go to the Web site (accessed Sep 2008). Materials for TeachersWomen in Astronomy Resource GuideAn updated, expanded resource guide to the role women have played and are playing in the development of astronomy is now available on the Web site of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (accessed Sep 2008). The guide includes both printed and Web-based materials and has general references to the work and lives of 32 women astronomers of the past and present. All materials are at the non-technical level and thus appropriate for student papers, curriculum development, or personal enrichment. The guide makes reference to 178 Web resources as well as books and articles that are either in print or found in many larger libraries. This resource guide is part of a series that can be found on the Society’s Web site, covering topics such as the astronomy of many cultures, debunking astronomical pseudo-science, and resources for astronomy education.Proposal DeadlinesNational Science Foundation Directorate for Education and Human ResourcesThe following NSF deadlines have been established or are anticipated. - Advanced Technological Education (ATE)
