The Egg in the Bottle Revisited: Air Pressure and Amontons' Law (Charles' Law)

Abstract
The "egg in the bottle" is a classic demonstration of Charles' law (P, T) found in many books of chemical demonstrations aimed primarily at elementary and high school students. Unfortunately, most of the explanations of the experiment are misleading and incorrect, many involving a shrinkage of the gas volume in a closed container. The correct interpretation of Charles' law is given along with some additional variations of the experiment.
