Abstract
The traditional line that is drawn across the periodic table to separate metals from nonmetals is not a guide to which elements are semimetals. Silicon, boron, and astatine adjoin the line but are nonmetals, while selenium and bismuth, which do not adjoin the line, are semimetals, and polonium, which does adjoin the line, is a metal.
